Stretch Marks in Pregnancy

Most women worry about stretch marks in pregnancy. Stretch marks are the small and depressed streaks that appear on the skin especially on the abdomen of pregnant women. This may occur because their skin needs to expand in order to accommodate that baby as it grows in their belly. Pregnant women may also have stretch marks on other parts of their body such as on their thighs, buttocks, hips and even on their breasts. Although at times, these stretch marks fade later, most of the time they stay and never disappear.

It may be a little difficult to tell if pregnant women will get stretch marks later though half of them may expect to have these. However, it may be helpful to know that some factors may increase their chances at having stretch marks. Some studies indicate that genetics may contribute to this condition. Those who have mothers or sisters with stretch marks during pregnancy may also expect to have it. There are also researches that show findings where teenage mothers are more prone to having these stretch marks.

Pregnant women who gain weight fast may also have more stretch marks. Those who are also carrying more than one baby as well as those with a bigger baby inside their wombs are more likely to have these stretch marks. Pregnant women with extra amniotic fluid may also have some stretch marks. Though there are really no effective means of preventing this from occurring, pregnant women can maintain their ideal weight and for them to try gaining weight gradually. These may reduce their chances of having these unsightly stretch marks.

Pregnant women may also observe that the pigmentation fades and their stretch marks may become lighter in shade. This usually happens from six months to one year after childbirth. It may be impossible to banish stretch marks for good but women may consult with their dermatologist in order for them to have some forms of treatment to at least minimize them. However, women must always consider their health safety and their babies as well especially if they opt to breastfeed their babies.

Pregnant women who would like to reduce the occurrence of stretch marks will have to check on their diet. They may need more foods that are rich in vitamin E and C as well as silica and zinc in order to keep their skin healthy. Pregnant women may also keep their bodies and their skins hydrated by drinking lots of water. They may also have to massage their skin with some safe and mild moisturizer so that they may improve the circulation of their blood. These may lessen their chances of having stretch marks. However, women may still expect some stretch marks during pregnancy.
