Mum
This week your blood volume has risen about 50% and your heart is beating faster than normal preparing your body for the extra demands of pregnancy. You may feel hot and bothered as your body temperature also rises a little. You have increased levels of oxygen in your blood being essential for your baby’s development.
Your figure is now changing and you may need a larger size bra with better support than usual. Your waistline may be expanding with your normal clothes becoming tight and uncomfortable. Drinking at least 8 glasses of fluoridated water a day should help give enough fluoride for calcium and phosphorus required for your baby’s developing teeth and bones.
You may experience cramps in your lower abdomen or sides because your uterus tightens and contracts throughout pregnancy. If contractions are accompanied by vaginal bleeding, you should consult your doctor or health care professional.
Bub
Baby is now about 18mm (3/4 inch) long, the size of a grape, and lots of changes take place this week including the loss of the embyonic tail with all organs, nerves and muscles beginning to function. Eyelids are beginning to cover the eyes and the feet are losing their webbed appearance.
Baby’s head is still out of proportion to his body but is now recognisable as a human being on ultrasound. Arms are now longer and bend at the elbows. Major internal organs are continuing to grow and develop.
Baby also now has his own blood type and the liver produces blood cells now rather than the yolk sac.
Tips
- Make sure you’re getting enough iodine which baby needs for his growing brain development and thyroid function.
- Reduced oxygen supplies for your baby that can lead to low birth weight will occur if you smoke while pregnant.
- To prevent future sagging and to feel more comfortable, have good breast support during your pregnancy. It is also helpful to keep your chest muscles toned with exercises.
